Our bodies interact with our environment to create and maintain health. Increasingly, this relationship is becoming strained as we take on increasing body burdens of fossil-fuel derived solvents and chemicals.
While most of us are aware that to maintain good health we should avoid things like smoking, air pollution and toxic moulds, eat quality food and drink clean water, there are other, more subtle ways that our environmental may be affecting our health. Our workplaces may contain chemicals toxic petrochemicals, cleaning products, hair styling products, or other solvents. We may be exposed to heavy metals through fish intake, automobile repair, handling ‘silver’ fillings, x-rays, painting, or hobbies such as glass blowing or jewellery production. We may be handling or preparing fruits and vegetables that contain high levels of pesticides.
Many of these chemicals and metals are implicated in common chronic illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, autism, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Lyme disease, and dementia. We are increasingly learning that environment can alter gene expression, increasing our risk for illness if the body is not supported in its ability to detoxify. This is particularly critical for children, with smaller bodies and developing systems, and for our older patients, where organ and immune function are waning.
This is where naturopathic medicine can play a truly life-changing role. By working with you to avoid exposures wherever possible, and testing for toxins that may play a role in health problems, we can not only help decrease you or your child’s symptoms right away, but just as importantly, improve your or their long-term health and ability to avoid chronic disease.
I do test and treat for both solvent and heavy metal toxicity as part of a total health care plan, and am experienced in oral and/or topical DMSA chelation therapy in both adults and kids.
